Nitnem is a compilation of various sacred texts that are meant to be recited by Sikh practitioners on a daily basis. It typically includes the five banis listed below, and sometimes also includes Rehiras Sahib and Kirtan Sohila.
The following banis are traditionally recited by practicing Sikhs each day:
- Japji Sahib
- Jaap Sahib
- Tav-Prasad Swaiye
- Chaupai Sahib
- Anand Sahib
- Rehras Sahib
- Sohila
The first five banis are generally recited in the early morning, while Rehiras Sahib is recited in the evening, usually around 6pm. Sohila is recited just before going to sleep at night.
